Microsoft 365 - Self Service Password Reset Tool Configuration

The self-service password reset tool has been enabled for SIUE accounts. Learn about the prompts you will encounter if you need to set up a phone number or the Authenticator app for your SIUE account.

Overview

On your next login to a Microsoft service with your SIUE account, you may be prompted to add additional information to enable the self-service password reset tool. This additional setup ensures you can reset your password without contacting the Help Desk.

Note: If you choose not to add a secondary authentication option and forget your password, you will need to contact the ITS Help Desk to have your password reset.

Add a Phone Number

If you currently use the Authenticator app for MFA, you will be prompted to add a phone number. Follow these steps:

  1. When you see the "More information required" prompt, click "Next" to start the process.
    1. Click Next to begin the process of adding a phone number
  2. Enter your mobile phone number in the "Add a phone number" screen, then click "Next".
    1. Enter your cell phone number and click Next
  3. You will receive a 4-digit code via text message. Enter this code in the confirmation screen and click "Next".

  4. After seeing the confirmation that your phone number was added successfully, click "Next" to continue to the web application you are accessing.

Add the Authenticator App

If you currently use a phone number for MFA, you will be prompted to set up the Authenticator app. Follow these steps:

  1. When you see the "More information required" prompt, click "Next" to start the process.
    1. Click Next to get started setting up the Authenticator app
  2. On the "Keep your account secure" screen, download the Microsoft Authenticator app from your device's app store if you haven't already.
  3. Once the app has been downloaded, click "Next" in the web page on your computer.
    1.  Download the Authenticator app on your phone
  4. Open the app on your phone and tap "Add Account" or the "+" button.
  5. Select "Work or school account" and then choose "Scan a QR code."
  6. On your computer, click "Next" to pull up the QR code on your computer screen.
    1. Scan this QR code with the Authenticator app
  7. Using the app, scan the QR code on your computer screen. After scanning, click "Next" on the computer screen.

  8. When prompted on your phone, enter the 2-digit code shown on your screen to confirm setup.
    1. Enter the 2 digit code into the app on your phone
  9. After seeing confirmation that the Authenticator app was successfully added, click "Next" to finish the process.

Recommended Practices

To ensure you can always access your account:

  • Set up both authentication methods (phone and app) when prompted
  • Keep your recovery phone number updated in your account settings
  • Make sure the Authenticator app remains installed on your mobile device
