Printers (Mac) - Add a SIUE Network Printer on macOS

This article has instructions on how to connect a Mac Computer to a on campus network printer.

Adding a network printer on a Mac uses the same dialog regardless of which SIUE printer is being added — the printer's IP address, queue name, and driver are the only values that change.

Before You Start

Have the following information ready for the printer being added:

  • Printer IP address (for example, 146.163.250.52).
  • Queue name (for example, GRADCopier).
  • Printer model (for example, Kyocera TASKalfa 2553ci).

Add the Printer

  1. Click the Apple menu.
  2. Select System Settings.
  3. Select Printers & Scanners.
  4. Click Add Printer, Scanner, or Fax.
  5. In the toolbar of the dialog that opens, click the IP tab.
  6. Fill in the fields as follows:
    • Address: the printer's IP address.
    • Protocol: Line Printer Daemon - LPD.
    • Queue: the printer's queue name. This must match exactly — names are case-sensitive.
    • Name: a friendly name to identify the printer in the print menu. Often the same as the queue name.
    • Location: optional — building or room, if helpful.

Select the Driver

  1. Click the Use drop-down menu.
  2. Select Select Software.
  3. Type the printer model into the search field (for example, Kyocera TASKalfa 2553ci).
  4. Select the matching driver in the list.
  5. Click OK.
  6. Click Add to finish.

The printer will appear in the Printers & Scanners list and is ready to use from any application.

If the Driver Is Not Listed

If the printer model does not appear in the Select Software list, the driver may need to be installed first. Visit the manufacturer's support site, download the macOS driver, and run the installer. Then return to the steps above and the driver will appear in the list.
