SIUE Student Systems - How to Change Your Display Name and e-ID
SIUE students can update how their name appears in university systems through two different processes: changing the display name (preferred name) and changing the e-ID itself. This guide explains both processes and their requirements.
Overview of Name Change Options
There are two types of name changes available:
- Display Name Change: Updates how your name appears in email, Blackboard, gradebook, and other systems
- e-ID Change: Changes your actual username/e-ID (requires legal name change documentation)
Display Name Changes
To update the name displayed in your email, Blackboard, gradebook, and other university systems, you have two options depending on whether you have legally changed your name.
Required Form
Both processes require the Name Change Request form available at:
- Website: https://www.siue.edu/registrar/forms/
- Form: Select "Name Change Request (pdf)"
Option 1: Legal Name Change
If you have legally changed your name:
- Complete the "Legal Name Change" section of the form
- Include the required legal documentation (court order, marriage certificate, etc.)
- Submit the completed form and documentation to the Service Center
Option 2: Preferred Name (No Legal Change)
If you have NOT legally changed your name but want to use a preferred display name:
- Complete the "Adding An Additional Name" section of the form
- Submit the form to the Service Center
Form Submission Options
Submit your completed form using one of these methods:
- In Person: Rendleman Hall Room 1309
- Fax: (618) 650-2081
e-ID Changes
Important: The display name change process does NOT change your actual e-ID (username). e-ID changes require additional steps.
Requirements for e-ID Changes
- You must have a legal name change documented by the Service Center or Human Resources
- e-ID changes are only available after legal name change documentation is processed
e-ID Change Process
- First, complete the legal name change process with the Service Center (see above)
- Once your legal name change is documented, email your e-ID change request to help@siue.edu
- ITS Help Desk will create a support ticket and forward it to the Unix team
- Check your email regularly - ITS will send you an email requesting approval of your new proposed e-ID
- Respond to the approval email promptly to confirm your new e-ID
- Unix will implement the e-ID change once you approve it
What to Expect During e-ID Changes
- Email forwarding: Emails sent to your old e-ID will forward to your new e-ID for one year
- Old emails: All existing emails will be transferred to your new account
Important Note About e-ID Approval
After submitting your e-ID change request, watch for an approval email from the Unix team. Many requests are delayed because users don't check their email for the approval message. You must respond to this email before your e-ID change can be completed.
