Blackboard Ultra (Faculty) - Assignments: Create a Blackboard Assignment

This article details how faculty can create an assignment in Blackboard Ultra.

Creating an Assignment

Assignments are a common method for instructors to assess student understanding. This guide outlines the process of creating an assignment within Blackboard Ultra.

Steps to Create an Assignment:

  1. Navigate to your course in Blackboard Ultra.
  2. In the Course Content area, hover over where you want to create the assignment. A plus sign (+) will appear. Click the plus sign.

  3. From the menu that appears, select Create.
  4. In the Create Item panel, click Assignment.
  5. In the New Assignment panel:
    • Add a title for the assignment.
    • Add instructions. You can use the content editor to format the text and add files, images, and multimedia.
  6. Click the gear icon next to "Assignment Settings."

    • Set a due date and select additional options for late submissions or to prohibit submissions after the due date.
    • Select "Collect submissions offline" if allowing in-person submission. 
    • Choose attempts allowed.
    • Set the maximum points possible.
    • Select "Post assessment grades automatically" to auto-post the grade to the Gradebook when the assessment is graded.
    • Click "Add grading rubric" to add an assignment rubric (optional).
    • Click "Add time limit" to add give students additional time beyond the due date/time selected.  
    • Choose whether to display grade statistics to students.
  7. Click the Save button.
  8. The visibility settings of newly created assignments are defaulted to "Hidden from students." Click the visibility drop-down and select "Visible to students."

The assignment will now be visible to students in the Course Content area. It is recommended to verify the assignment settings and student view to ensure everything is configured as expected.
