Blackboard Ultra (Students) - Assignments: Submitting Multiple Attempts for Assignments

This article explains how students can submit multiple attempts for an assignment in Blackboard Ultra, if the instructor has enabled this option.

Checking if Multiple Attempts are Allowed

Before submitting an assignment, it's important to verify if your instructor allows multiple attempts. Here's how:

  1. Navigate to the assignment within your Blackboard Ultra course.
  2. In the Grades/Attempts section, you will see whether the assignment allows multiple attempts.

Submitting an Assignment (First Attempt)

Blackboard assignments can be accessed from various course areas, including:

  • The activity stream
  • In the course calendar
  • On the Course Content page
  • Within individual modules

  3. In the Submission area, there are multiple options for completing the assignment submission:
    1. Drag and drop a file into the submission area.
    2. Select Attachment (paperclip icon) to browse the local files on a device.
    3. Select Insert Content (plus sign icon) and choose Cloud storage to browse a cloud service such as OneDrive.
    4. Use the text editor to type out the submission.

  4. When ready to submit, select Submit at the bottom right of the screen. A panel appears to confirm the submission. Assignments cannot be edited after they are submitted.
  5. After a successful submission, a submission receipt will pop up. This can be closed or downloaded for personal records. A submission receipt should also be sent via email.

Submitting Additional Attempts

If multiple attempts are allowed, you can submit additional versions of your assignment. The process is similar to the initial submission:

  1. Navigate back to the assignment within your Blackboard Ultra course.
  2. In the Grades/Attempts box, you can view your previously submitted attempt. If the instructor has graded your previous attempt, the grade will show up here, too.
  3. Start another attempt by clicking View instructions. From there, follow the same steps as above (in steps 3-5) to submit any additional attempts.

Important Considerations

  • Due Dates: Pay close attention to the assignment's due date. Late submissions may not be accepted or may be penalized, even if multiple attempts are allowed.
  • Instructor Preferences: Some instructors may have specific preferences regarding multiple attempts. For example, they might only grade the final attempt. Always clarify any doubts with your instructor.
  • File Formats: Ensure your submitted files are in the required format (e.g., .doc, .pdf, .jpg). Submitting incompatible file formats may result in a failing grade.
