Blackboard Ultra (Faculty) - Attendance: Access and Enter Attendance
This article outlines how faculty can access and enter attendance in Blackboard Ultra courses.
Accessing Attendance
There are two methods to access the attendance tool in Blackboard Ultra:
Method 1: Course Content Page
- Navigate to your Blackboard Ultra course.
- In the Details & Actions panel on the left, under Attendance, select "Mark attendance".

Method 2: Gradebook
- Navigate to your Blackboard Ultra course.
- Locate the Gradebook tab on the horizontal navigational bar.
- In the Gradebook view, select the Attendance item.

Entering Attendance
Once you have accessed the Attendance tool, you can begin marking attendance for each student.
- Select the meeting date to record attendance. If it is the first time using the Attendance tool, the current day's date will be displayed. You can use the arrow keys to navigate to different dates.
- For each student, select the appropriate attendance status from the dropdown menu:
- Present: The student is present.
- Absent: The student is absent.
- Late: The student is late.
- Excused: The student is excused.
- Attendance is automatically saved as you enter it. There is no "Save" button.
Understanding Attendance Status Indicators
Blackboard Ultra uses icons to represent different attendance statuses:
- Green checkmark: Present
- Red X: Absent
- Yellow Clock: Late
- Gray Bubble: Excused
Editing Attendance
You can edit attendance records at any time.
- Navigate to the Attendance tool.
- Select the date you want to edit. You can click Meeting in the upper right corner to see more than one date at a time.

- Change the attendance status for the desired student(s).
