Blackboard Ultra (Faculty) - Add a Learning Module to Course Content

This article explains how instructors can add a learning module to a content area in Blackboard Ultra courses.

Adding a Learning Module

Learning modules in Blackboard Ultra provide a structured way for students to navigate course content. They allow instructors to organize related materials into a sequential path, ensuring students progress through the content in a logical order.

Steps to Add a Learning Module:

  1. Navigate to your Blackboard Ultra course.
  2. Select Content. Then click the plus sign (+) where you'd like to add a learning module.

    The first option "Content" on the left of a horizontal menu bar is highlighted. Below that a small plus sign in a gray circle is highlighted.

  3. In the drop-down menu, select Create.

    The first item of the drop-down menu is highlighted. The item is labeled "Create" with a plus sign (+) in a circle icon.

  4. In the Create Item panel, click Learning Module.

    The "Create Item" drop-down menu has the first option under "Course Content Items" is highlighted and titled "Learning Module"  with a rectangular icon with lines to represent text and boxes to represent icons or images..

  5. A new, blank learning module will appear. Click the module title to edit the title. Enter a descriptive title for the learning module in the "Learning Module Title" field. For example, "Week 1: Introduction to Psychology".

    Bb Course Template information appears. At the top is a default title for the new learning module that you can click on to edit.

  6. Configure visibility and other module settings:
    • Visible to students: Choose whether the module is immediately visible to students. You can choose to hide the module until you are ready for students to access it.

      The first option in the Bb Course Template menu under the learning module title is a drop-down menu where you can select to make this module visible or hidden from students. There is an eye icon for visible and an eye with a slash icon for hidden.

    • Description: Add a description to inform students what they will learn or find in the module.

      The Bb Course Template menu displays a text box under "Description" that allows you to add up to 750 characters to describe the learning module.

    • Advance In Sequence: Click the check box next to "Forced Sequence" if you only want students to access the learning module in sequence after completing previous learning modules. 

      Halfway down the the Bb Course Template menu is a section titled "Advance in sequence" with a check box that allows student to access module's content in sequence only. A course link cannot be added to a learning module when a forced sequence is activiated.

    • Image: Optionally, you can add an image to the learning module section by clicking Add Image

  7. To add content to the learning module, click the plus sign (+) under the module. You can create new content, copy content from another course, upload files, or access cloud storage. You can also select content market, content collection, or the Learning Object Repository.

    Under the newly created Learning Module, there is a plus sign in a circle icon that you can click to add content to this module specifically.

  8. Continue adding content items (documents, files, links, assessments, etc.) to the learning module as needed. You can reorder items by clicking on the six small dots on the edge of the module to drag and drop.

    2 columns of 3 dots (6 dots total) are highlighted on the far left of the Learning Module icon. Click these dots to drag and drop and reorder the content or learning module.

Tips for Effective Learning Modules

  • Structure the content logically to guide students through the material.
  • Use clear and concise titles for each item within the module.
  • Provide context and instructions to help students understand the purpose of each module.
