Blackboard Ultra (Students) - Discussions: Create a New Discussion

This article outlines the process for students to create a new discussion in the Discussions tab of a Blackboard Ultra course.

Create a New Discussion

To create a new discussion in a Blackboard Ultra course, follow these steps:

  1. Navigate to the course.
  2. Locate and click on the Discussions tab.
  3. In Discussions, click the New Discussion button on the far right. Please note that the ability for students to create a new discussion is off by default when each course is created. If the New Discussion button is not present in the Discussions tab, then this option has not been enabled by the instructor.

    The fourth tab on the horizontal toolbar labeled discussions is highlighted. In the lower right corner is a black button labeled new discussion.

  4. Locate and click on the title of the discussion. By default, this is "New Discussion", followed by the current date. Replace the default title with a new descriptive one.

    Under the course name is the default discussion title which is "new discussion" and the current date.

  5. Type or paste text in the textbox that says "What do you want to talk about?"

    Beneath the text editor toolbar is a textbox with the prompt "What do you want to talk about?" grayed out as a signal to type here.

  6. (Optional) Insert a link into to the discussion by clicking the Link button (chain link). This is the recommended path for sharing video.

  7. (Optional) Attach files to the discussion by clicking the Attachment button (paperclip).

  8. Click Save to create the discussion.

    A box with a text editor tool bar on top displays a message that says "What do you want to talk about." Type your post here and click the Save button in the lower right corner.
