Blackboard Ultra (Faculty) - Export/Import: Export and Import Course Content
Exporting a Course Package
Exporting your Blackboard Ultra course allows you to save a copy of your course materials to your computer. This can be useful for backing up your course content or for transferring it to another Blackboard course shell. The following instructions explain how to export a Blackboard Ultra course. To export a course from the original Blackboard Learn, refer to Blackboard (Faculty) - Export/Import: Export Course Materials
Steps to Export a Course Package:
- Navigate to the Course Content page of the Blackboard Ultra course for export.
- Click the ellipsis (...) icon on the top right next to the magnifying glass icon.
- Select Export Course Package from the menu.

- A panel will appear with an option to Export Course. Click the Export Course icon, which looks like a box with an arrow pointing out of its top-right corner.

- You may be presented with a pop-window about including student activity data in your export. Select No.
- A .zip file of your course will be downloaded to your computer. The download time will vary depending on the size of your course.
Important Considerations:
- The exported course package includes course content, assessments, discussions, and other course-related materials.
- Student data is generally not included in the export. If you need to retain student submissions and grades, contact the ITS Help Desk for assistance.
- The exported package is a .zip file. Do not unzip the file unless you intend to view the contents, as it needs to remain zipped for import.
Troubleshooting:
If you encounter issues during the export process:
- Ensure you have a stable internet connection.
- Clear your browser's cache and cookies.
- Try using a different web browser.
- If the problem persists, contact the ITS Help Desk for assistance.
Importing Course Content
Blackboard Ultra allows instructors to import course materials from a previously exported course package. This is useful for reusing content from past semesters or sharing materials between instructors.
Steps to Import a Course Content:
- Navigate to the Blackboard Ultra course where you want to import the materials.
- In the Course Content area, click the ellipsis (...) icon on the top right.
- Select Import Content.

- Browse to the location of the course package file you previously exported (typically a .zip file).
- Select the file and click Open.
- A progress bar will appear, indicating the upload progress. Once uploaded, Blackboard will process the course package. This process may take several minutes, depending on the size of the course package.
- A message will appear at the top of the screen indicating the import is complete. You may need to refresh your page afterward.
Important Considerations:
- Content that is not compatible with Blackboard Ultra may change format or not import at all. A message will appear explaining which items were impacted by this. For example, "either/or" questions do not exist in Blackboard Ultra, so they would not be included in the import.
- The imported content will be added to the existing course content. It will not overwrite existing content.
- Review the imported content after the import is complete to ensure it is displayed as expected and that all links and resources are working correctly.
Troubleshooting:
If you encounter problems during the import process, consider the following:
- Verify that the course package is not corrupted. Try re-downloading or recreating the course package.
- Check the size of the course package. Very large packages may take a long time to import or may fail to import completely. Consider breaking the course package into smaller segments if possible.
- Ensure that you have sufficient storage space in your Blackboard Ultra course.
