Blackboard Ultra (Faculty) - Gradebook: Create a Gradebook Column
Creating a Gradebook Column
You can manually create both graded and non-graded columns in your Blackboard Ultra gradebook to track student performance on various assessments and assignments that are not linked to an item in Blackboard. For example, you might want to add a column to record grades for activities that students submit in person during class.
Creating a Graded Item Column
To create a column for a graded item (e.g., an assignment, test, or participation grade):
- Navigate to your Blackboard Ultra course and access the Gradebook. You can add a column from the Gradable Items or Grades tabs.
- Click the purple plus sign in between items or columns and select Add Item.

- Give the column a name and fill out the appropriate grading settings, such as due date, visibility settings, points possible, grade category, etc.

- 4. Click Save to add the column to the Gradebook.
Creating a Non-Graded Item Column
Sometimes, you may want to create a column in the Gradebook to track items that are not directly graded (e.g., attendance, participation, or completion). This type of column allows you to enter text in place of a number. For example you can type yes/no or done/not done to indicate whether students have completed the task. To do this:
- Navigate to your Blackboard Ultra course and access the Gradebook. You can add a column from the Gradable Items or Grades tabs.
- Click the purple plus sign in between items or columns and select Add Text Item.

- Give the column a name, adjust the visibility settings, and add a description.

- Click Save to add the column to the Gradebook.
