Blackboard Ultra (Faculty) - Gradebook: Extra Credit

This article explains how to add extra credit to the Blackboard Ultra gradebook, either within an existing assessment or as a standalone column.

Adding Extra Credit Within an Assessment

You can offer extra credit on an assessment in two ways:

  • Add points to a student's assessment score.
  • Create an extra credit question.

Adding Points to a Student's Assessment Score

To manually add points to a student's existing grade, follow these steps:

  1. Navigate to your course in Blackboard Ultra.
  2. In the left navigation panel, click Gradebook.
  3. Locate the assessment you want to add extra credit to.
  4. Click on the grade cell for the specific student and assessment.
  5. The score will highlight, then enter the updated score,, including the extra credit points.

  6. Hit the Enter key.

Creating an Extra Credit Question

When building or editing an assessment, you can create questions specifically designated as extra credit.

  1. Navigate to your course in Blackboard Ultra.
  2. Click on the assessment you wish to modify, or create a new one.
  3. In the assessment builder, click the purple plus sign where you want to add the extra credit question.
  4. Select the question type you want to use for extra credit (e.g., Multiple Choice, Essay).

  5. Click the Extra Credit checkbox when creating the question. This will mark the question as extra credit.

  6. Assign the point value for the extra credit question.
  7. Extra credit questions will display a purple badge next to the point value.

  8. Save the assessment.

Adding Extra Credit as a Standalone Column

You can also create a manual grade column specifically for extra credit.

  1. Navigate to your course in Blackboard Ultra.
  2. In the left navigation panel, click Gradebook.
  3. Click the plus sign in the gradebook grid, and then click Add Item.

  4. Enter a descriptive title for the extra credit column (e.g., "Participation Bonus").

  5. Optionally, adjust the points possible and due date.
  6. Ensure that Visible to students is selected if you want students to see the column.
  7. Click Save.
  8. To assign extra credit, Click on the individual student's cell and enter the extra credit points.
