Blackboard Ultra (All Users) - Removing Formatting in the Text Editor

This article explains how to remove unwanted formatting from text pasted into Blackboard Ultra's text editor.

Blackboard Ultra's text editor allows you to paste text from other sources, such as Microsoft Word or websites. Sometimes, this pasted text includes unwanted formatting that can affect the appearance of your content. Here's how to remove this formatting:

Removing Formatting

  1. Open the item or area where you want to add text in Blackboard Ultra. This could be an assignment, a discussion board post, or any other area with the text editor.
  2. Copy the text you want to paste from its original source (e.g., Microsoft Word, a website).
  3. In Blackboard Ultra's text editor, locate the "Clear Format" button, which is represented by an eraser or a T with a little X icon.

The text editor tool bar has a button with a small eraser icon on it to clear the formatting of pasted text.

The text editor tool bar has a button with a "T" and a little "x" icon on it to clear the formatting of pasted text.

  4. Paste your text into the text editor.
  5. Click the "Clear Format" button. This will strip away most of the formatting from the pasted text, leaving you with plain text.
  6. You can then use the Blackboard Ultra text editor's formatting tools to re-apply formatting as desired.

Alternative Methods

If the "Remove Formatting" button doesn't remove all of the formatting, you can try these alternative methods:

  • Paste as Plain Text: Some browsers and operating systems offer a "Paste as Plain Text" option. This will paste the text without any formatting. To use this option, right-click in the text editor and look for "Paste as Plain Text" or a similar option.

The right-click menu has an option to "Paste without formatting."

  • Notepad or TextEdit: Paste the text into a plain text editor like Notepad (Windows) or TextEdit (Mac) and then copy it from there. This will remove all formatting before you paste it into Blackboard. Then copy and paste into Blackboard.
