Blackboard Ultra (Faculty) - Time and Date Restrictions

This article explains how to set time and date restrictions on content items in Blackboard Ultra to control student access.

Setting Time and Date Restrictions

You can set time and date restrictions to control when students can access course content, such as documents, assignments, and modules, in Blackboard Ultra. In Blackboard Learn, this was called "Adaptive Release", but in Blackboard Learn Ultra, this is called "Release Conditions".

Release conditions limit access to this content by creating rules with one or more conditions. Course members must satisfy the conditions for at least one rule before content is released. Changes to the visibility or release conditions apply to the linked item and all associated course links.

Applying Restrictions to Individual Items

  1. Navigate to your course in Blackboard Ultra.
  2. Locate the content item (e.g., document, assignment, or module) you want to restrict.
  3. Click the visibility setting (e.g., Visible to students or Hidden from students) and select "Release conditions" from the drop-down menu.

The visibility drop-down menu reveals a third option labeled "Release conditions".

  4. Item conditions previously set on that item are listed on the left-hand side of the panel.
  5. To create a new rule, click the pencil icon to name the rule. The default rule name will be "Rule 1" or whatever number of rule it is.
  6. Choose your settings:
    • Select members: Choose which course members and groups will have access to this content. Select "All members" to apply the release conditions to everyone enrolled in the course. Select "Specific members or groups" and then use the drop-down menus to make your selection.
    • Date and Time: Set a specific date and time for the item to become visible or hidden.
    • Activity: Use the drop-down menus to choose an item and the requirement that must be met on that item before the release condition is met (i.e., opened, attempt submitted, a specific score, etc.).
  7. After selecting the desired dates and times, click Save.
  8. The new rule will appear on the left-hand side of the Release Conditions panel.
  9. The content item will now display a hyperlink to "Edit release conditions". Hover over the link to display a brief message about the release conditions on that item, or click the hyperlink to access the Release Conditions panel to adjust the settings.

Next to the item name is a clickable hyperlink labeled "Edit release conditions".

Considerations

  • Ensure that the time zone settings for your Blackboard course are accurate to prevent unexpected availability issues.
  • Communicate clearly with students about any time and date restrictions on course materials.
  • Always double-check the restrictions you set to ensure they align with your intended course design.
