Blackboard Ultra (Faculty) - Tests, Forms, and Pools: Resolve Issues with a Test
Troubleshooting Test Issues in Blackboard Ultra
If students are experiencing issues with a test in your Blackboard Ultra course, or if you encounter errors when attempting to access or manage a test, the following troubleshooting steps may help resolve the problem.
Verify Test Visibility and Availability
Ensure the test is visible to students and that the availability settings are configured correctly:
- In your Blackboard Ultra course, navigate to the Course Content area.
- Locate the test in question.
- Click on the test title to open the test settings panel.
- Use the drop-down menu in the upper-right corner to confirm that the test is set to Visible to students.

- Check the Release conditions to make sure the student completed what was required on the release conditions you set.
- Under Due date, make sure the due date and time are set appropriately and that the test is currently available.
Check for Browser Compatibility Issues
Students may experience problems if they are using an unsupported browser or have browser settings that interfere with Blackboard. It is recommended that students use a supported browser, such as Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox, and keep it up to date.
- Clear the browser's cache and cookies using these instructions.
- Disable browser extensions or add-ons that may be interfering with Blackboard.
- Try accessing the test from a different browser to see if the issue persists.
Review Test Settings
Incorrect test settings can cause unexpected behavior. Use the quick access settings panel or click the gear icon next to Assessment settings to review the following settings:

- Time Limit: Verify that the time limit is reasonable and that students are aware of the time limit.
- Attempts Allowed: Confirm that students have the correct number of attempts allowed. If a student has already used all of their attempts, they will not be able to access the test.
- Force Completion: If the "Force Completion" setting is enabled, students must complete the test in one sitting. If they close the test window or lose their internet connection, they will not be able to resume the test.
- Assessment Security: Review the proctoring and lockdown browser settings, if enabled, and ensure that students have the necessary software installed and configured correctly.
Inspect the Test for Corrupted Questions
In rare cases, a question within the test may become corrupted, causing the entire test to malfunction. If you suspect a corrupted question:
- Open the test for editing.
- Review each question individually.
- Look for any questions that appear to be missing content, displaying incorrectly, or causing errors.
- Delete the suspect question and recreate it. Consider importing the question from a backup if available.
