Blackboard Ultra (Faculty) - Turnitin Assignments: Create a Turnitin Assignment

This article explains how faculty can create a Turnitin assignment in Blackboard Ultra.

Creating a Turnitin Assignment

Turnitin is a plagiarism prevention and detection tool integrated into Blackboard Ultra. It allows instructors to check student submissions for originality and provide feedback directly on the assignment.Turnitin can be enabled on an assignment or you can add an assignment to Blackboard directly through Turnitin for advanced usability.

Steps to Enable Turnitin on an Assignment

  1. Navigate to your course in Blackboard Ultra.
  2. On the Course Content page, click the + icon to create the assignment.
  3. Click on the Enable Turnitin hyperlink below Originality Report under Assignment Settings. You can also select the gear icon next to Assignment Settings and scroll down to find the same setting.

    The Assignment Setting quick view panel lists the Originality Report last with a hyperlink to enable Turnitin.
     
  4. Enable Turnitin by clicking the slider to the "On" position.

    The originality report panel displays a toggle button to enable Turnitin and lists submission options.

  5. Set the desired Turnitin options:
    • Submission Settings:
      • Store Student Settings: Select the standard paper repository to store the paper in the database for future comparisons for similarity.
      • Compare the student submission against: Determine which sources the student submission will be compared against for similarity. 
      • Similarity Report: Determine what types of materials you want to exclude from the report.
  6. Click the Save button.

Steps to Create a Turnitin Assignment

  1. Navigate to your course in Blackboard Ultra.
  2. On the Course Content page, click the + icon in the desired location.
  3. Select Content Market.

    The plus sign is now an "X" and displays the content menu. Content Market is the sixth item down and has a shopping cart icon.

  4. Locate and click on the Turnitin LtI 1.3 tile.

  5. Select Standard Assignment if this is a new assignment or Copy if it already exists in your library.

    Beneath the title "Create an Assignment" is a light gray box with a paper icon labeled standard assignment. Below that is double page paper icon labeled copy assigments.

  6. The Turnitin settings panel will appear.
  7. Type a descriptive title and assignment instructions in the text editor box and toolbar.
  8. Determine the maximum grade allowed. Set the start, due, and feedback release dates.

  9. Click on Optional Settings and hover over the blue question mark (?) icon to see more advanced option descriptions:
    • Submission settings:
      • Submit Papers to the Standard Paper repository, or do not store submitted papers.
      • Allow submission of any file type
      • Allow late submissions
      • Enable anonymous marking
      • Attach a rubric for grading
    • Similarity Report:
      • Generate Similarity Reports for student submission: make a selection based on when the report should be generated and if students can resbumit.
      • Allow students to view Similarity Reports
      • Exclude bibliographic materials
      • Exclude quoted materials
      • Exclude small sources
    • Compare against:
      • Student paper repository
      • Current and archived website content
      • Periodicals, journals, and publications
    • Exclude assignment template
      • Upload or create a template of text to be automatically excluded from the Similarity Report. Once a submission has been made ot the assignment, templates can no longer be added or edited.
    • Additional Settings:
      • Check the box to save these settings for future use.
  10. Click the Submit button.
  11. The assignment should now appear on your Course content page. Drag and drop the block to organize your content as needed. 

Accessing Turnitin Similarity Reports

Once students submit their assignments, you can access the Turnitin Similarity Reports by clicking on the assignment in your Blackboard Ultra course and then clicking on a student's submission. The Similarity Report will show the percentage of the submission that matches other sources.
