CougarNet - Understanding Action Item Statuses

Students can use this guide to understand action item statuses in CougarNet (Self-Service Banner) and determine which items still need a response.

About Action Items

Action items are notifications in CougarNet (Self-Service Banner) that require a student to respond. On the action item page, the list of items appears on the left and the content for the selected item appears in the right panel. The status of each item appears in the upper-right of the item.

Login Notification

If you have any pending action items, you will see a notification when you log in to CougarNet that reads "You have active action item(s) available for your review."

  • Click View Action Item(s) to open the action item page and review each item.
  • Click Dismiss to close the notification for the current session. Dismissing does not complete the items, and the notification will return at your next login until the items are resolved.

How to Check the Status of an Action Item

  1. Log in to CougarNet.
  2. Open the action item page from the login notification or the Self-Service Banner menu.
  3. Select an action item from the list on the left.
  4. Review the status badge in the upper-right of the item.

Status Types

Pending

A purple Pending badge means the item still needs your attention. Each action item group on the left side shows a counter indicating how many items in that group are completed out of the total (for example, "0 / 1" means none of one item has been completed).

Completed

A green Completed badge means you have already responded to the item and will not be prompted to respond again. Some completed items remain visible in the list because removing them would trigger a new action item to be posted in their place.

Understanding the Red Slash Icon

The red slash that may appear next to an action item does not indicate status. It indicates that a process, such as registration for classes, is currently being halted by that action item.

Important: Even when a red slash appears next to an item, the status badge is what determines whether a response is still required. If the status shows "Completed," no further action is needed, even if the red slash is still visible.
