Eduroam (Chromebook) – Connect to the SIUE Wireless Network

Students, faculty, and staff can connect a Chromebook to the eduroam wireless network at SIUE using either an automated setup tool or a one-time manual configuration.

Chromebooks can join eduroam in two ways: an automated setup that imports a configuration file for you, or a manual setup that enters the wireless security settings by hand. Most users should try the automated method first.

Eduroam: The secure wireless network used across SIUE and at participating institutions worldwide. Once configured, the Chromebook will connect automatically on campus and at other eduroam-enabled schools.

Before You Start

  • Have the full SIUE email address ready (for example, ecougar@siue.edu). The E-ID alone will not work.
  • Have the E-ID password ready.
  • If this Chromebook has tried to connect to eduroam before, see the "Error or Problem Configuring Device" section below to remove the old profile first.

Method 1: Automated Setup (Recommended)

This method uses SecureW2, a tool that downloads a configuration file (an ONC file) and applies the correct wireless settings automatically.

  1. Connect the Chromebook to the "Welcome to SIUE" wireless network.
  2. Open Chrome and go to http://wifisetup.siue.edu.
  3. If prompted to install a Chrome extension, confirm Chrome Web Store is selected in the dropdown.
  4. Click Install.
  5. Click Add to Chrome.
  6. Click Add extension.
  7. Return to the original browser tab.
  8. When prompted, sign in using the full SIUE email address and E-ID password.
  9. A new browser tab will open. Switch to that tab.
  10. Scroll to the "Import ONC File" section at the bottom of the page.
  11. Click Choose File.
  12. Open the Downloads folder.
  13. Select the SecureW2.onc file.
  14. Click Open. The page may appear unchanged — this is expected.
  15. Click the Wi-Fi icon in the bottom-right corner of the screen.
  16. Click the arrow next to the currently connected network.
  17. Select eduroam from the list.
  18. Do not change any settings on the eduroam properties page. Click Connect.

The Chromebook should join eduroam within a few seconds.

Method 2: Manual Configuration

Use this method if the automated setup did not work, or if entering the settings by hand is preferred.

  1. Click the time area in the bottom-right corner of the screen to open the Quick Settings panel.
  2. Click the Wi-Fi label (not the toggle switch) to open the list of available networks.
  3. Select eduroam from the list. A "Join Wi-Fi Network" dialog will appear.
  4. Set EAP method to PEAP.
  5. Set EAP Phase 2 authentication to MSCHAPv2.
  6. Set Server CA certificate to Do not check.
  7. In the Identity field, enter the full SIUE email address (for example, ecougar@siue.edu).
  8. In the Password field, enter the E-ID password.
  9. Leave the Anonymous identity field blank.
  10. Turn on Save identity and password so the credentials are remembered between sessions.
  11. Click Connect.

Troubleshooting

"Error" or "Problem Configuring Device"

This message usually means a previous connection attempt left behind an incomplete network profile, and the system cannot overwrite it automatically. Removing the saved profile and starting fresh resolves it.

  1. Open the Quick Settings panel.
  2. Click the gear icon to open Settings.
  3. Go to Network > Wi-Fi.
  4. Find eduroam in the "Known networks" list and click it.
  5. Click Forget.
  6. Return to the Wi-Fi network list and repeat either method above.

Connected to Eduroam, but No Internet Access

This usually means the Chromebook did not complete a DHCP lookup on the first try. DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) is the process that assigns a device an address on the network — without it, the connection appears active but cannot reach the internet.

  1. Open Settings and go to Network > Wi-Fi.
  2. Click eduroam in the known networks list.
  3. Turn on Prefer this network.
  4. Turn on Connect automatically.
  5. Close Settings. The Chromebook will keep retrying the connection until it succeeds.

Forgotten E-ID Password

If the current password still works, it can be changed at myaccount.microsoft.com. If the password has been forgotten, there are three recovery options:

  • "I Forgot My Password" link: If an alternate verification method is already set up, click the "I Forgot My Password" link on any Microsoft login page to reset the credentials.
  • In person: Visit the ITS Help Desk in Lovejoy Library, Room 0005, with a valid photo ID.
  • By phone: Call (618) 650-5500 to verify identity and receive a temporary password.

Once a working password is in place, return to the configuration steps above.
