Account Access - Register a Passkey for Your SIUE Account

Register a passkey on your iPhone, Android device, or Windows PC to meet Microsoft's February 1, 2027 phishing-resistant authentication requirement for your SIUE account.

Already using Microsoft Authenticator? You are in the right place. You do not need to reinstall Authenticator or read the background content below, select your device from the list in Choose Your Device and register your passkey now.

Not yet set up with Authenticator? Set that up first, then return here. See Account Access - Set Up Microsoft Authenticator for Your SIUE Account

No smartphone and your device does not support passkeys? A FIDO2 hardware security key is the required alternative. See Account Access - Set Up a FIDO2 Security Key for Your SIUE Account

Choose Your Device

Select the device you want to register a passkey on. Your phone is the most convenient option — your passkey travels with you. You can register passkeys on more than one device.

Set Up on iPhone

Before You Start

  • Your iPhone must be running iOS 16 or later.
  • iCloud Keychain must be enabled. Go to Settings > [Your Name] > iCloud > Passwords and confirm sync is on. On iOS 17 and earlier, this section is called Passwords and Keychain.
  • Have your SIUE email address, password, and current sign-in method ready.

Register the Passkey

  1. On your iPhone, open Safari and go to https://mysignins.microsoft.com/security-info.
  2. Sign in with your SIUE email address, password, and your current sign-in method.
  3. Select Add sign-in method.
  4. Select Passkey from the dropdown, then select Add.
  5. When the iOS prompt appears, select Continue and authenticate with Face ID, Touch ID, or your device passcode.
  6. Enter a name for your passkey (for example, My iPhone) and select Done.

Passkeys saved on iPhone are stored in iCloud Keychain and sync automatically to your other Apple devices signed in to the same Apple ID. You do not need to register separately on your iPad or Mac.

Set Up on Android

Before You Start

  • Your device must be running Android 14 or later.
  • A secure screen lock (PIN, pattern, fingerprint, or face unlock) must be enabled.
  • Have your SIUE email address, password, and current sign-in method ready.

Register the Passkey

  1. On your Android device, open Google Chrome and go to https://mysignins.microsoft.com/security-info.
  2. Sign in with your SIUE email address, password, and your current sign-in method.
  3. Select Add sign-in method.
  4. Select Passkey from the dropdown, then select Add.
  5. When the Android prompt appears, select Continue and authenticate with your fingerprint, face unlock, or screen lock PIN.
  6. Enter a name for your passkey (for example, My Android Phone) and select Done.

Passkeys saved on Android are stored in Google Password Manager and sync automatically to your other Android devices signed in to the same Google account.

Set Up on Windows PC

Before You Start

  • Your PC must be running Windows 10 (version 22H2) or Windows 11.
  • Windows Hello must be configured on the device with at least a PIN set up. See #windows-hello-setupSet Up Windows Hello below if you have not done this.
  • Use Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome. Avoid Firefox for passkey registration.
  • Have your SIUE email address, password, and current sign-in method ready.

Set Up Windows Hello First (If Needed)

To register a passkey on a Windows PC, Windows Hello needs at least a PIN configured. This PIN is used locally on the device to unlock the passkey. It is not your SIUE password, and it does not change how you log in to Windows.

Note: SIUE has Windows Hello for Business turned off. A passkey registered on your PC is used only to sign in to Microsoft services like email, Blackboard, and Cougarnet. It does not change how you sign in to the Windows computer itself.

  1. Select Start > Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options.
  2. Under Windows Hello PIN, select Set up and follow the prompts to create a PIN.
  3. If your device has a fingerprint reader or camera, you can optionally add those methods on this screen as well.

If the Windows Hello PIN option does not appear, your PC may not support Windows Hello. Contact the ITS Help Desk for assistance.

Register the Passkey

  1. Open Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome and go to https://mysignins.microsoft.com/security-info.
  2. Sign in with your SIUE email address, password, and your current sign-in method.
  3. Select Add sign-in method.
  4. Select Passkey from the dropdown, then select Add.
  5. When prompted to choose where to save your passkey, select This Windows device.
  6. A Windows Security prompt appears — select Continue and verify with your Windows Hello PIN, fingerprint, or facial recognition.
  7. Enter a name for your passkey (for example, My Work Laptop) and select Done.

Passkeys on Windows are stored locally and do not sync. If you have more than one Windows PC, register a passkey on each one separately.

Confirm Your Passkey Is Registered

  1. Go to https://mysignins.microsoft.com/security-info and sign in.
  2. Confirm your new passkey appears in the list — it may show the name you gave it (for example, My iPhone) or the device type.
  3. Confirm Microsoft Authenticator is also listed. Both must be present for your account to be fully ready for the February 1, 2027 deadline.

If the passkey does not appear, return to the setup steps for your device and try again. If the registration fails repeatedly, see Account Access - Troubleshoot SIUE Sign-In and Authentication Problems or contact the ITS Help Desk.

Register a Second Passkey (Optional)

You can register passkeys on more than one device. If your phone is lost or unavailable, a passkey on your computer or a FIDO2 key means you can still sign in without going through account recovery.

  • To add a passkey on a second device, repeat the steps for that device above while signed in from a device that already has a working passkey.
