Blackboard Ultra (Faculty) - Enable Progress Tracking

This article provides an overview of how to use progress tracking to track in Blackboard Ultra.

Progress Tracking in Blackboard Ultra helps students monitor their progress through course content and provides instructors with insights into student engagement. When enabled, students can see which content items they have started or completed, while instructors can view progress information for individual students and specific course content.

Progress Tracking can be enabled at any time during a course. If it is enabled after the course has started, previously completed assessments are automatically marked as complete for students.

Enable Progress Tracking

  1. Open your Blackboard Ultra course.
  2. Select Course Settings in the upper-right corner of the Course Content page.
  3. Locate the Progress Tracking section.

  4. Turn on the Track Student Progress toggle.

Changes are saved automatically.

Understanding Student Progress Indicators

When Progress Tracking is enabled, students see a progress icon next to course content.

  • Empty circle = The student has not accessed the item.
  • Partially filled circle = The student has opened or started the item.
  • Green Checkmark = The item has been completed, marked complete, or submitted.

For assignments, tests, and other submitted activities, Blackboard automatically marks the item as complete after submission. For content such as documents, files, and links, students may need to manually mark the item as complete.

When all items within a folder or learning module are completed, the folder or learning module is automatically marked as complete.

Student View of Progress Tracking

Students can use Progress Tracking to monitor their progress through course content and view completion progress within Learning Modules. A collapsible table of contents displays progress indicators for all module content, allowing students to easily track what has been started and completed.

  • When students open a document, file, or link, the item is automatically marked as Started and displays a partially filled circle.
  • After reviewing the content, students can manually mark the item as Complete, which displays a green checkmark.
  • Participatory activities, such as Assignments, Tests, and Discussions, are automatically marked as complete when students submit their work.
