Blackboard (Faculty & Students) - Known Issue: Display Issues Caused by Out-of-Date or Unsupported Browsers

This document describes how to troubleshoot issues with Blackboard and out-of-date/unsupported browsers and plugins.

Using an out-of-date or unsupported browser with Blackboard can cause a variety of display issues, including not being able to access certain content, such as embedded videos or web links. Follow these troubleshooting steps to determine if your browser or browser plugins need to be updated:

  1. Visit Blackboard's browser checker page.
This page will automatically detect your browser version and various plugins. A red "X" will indicate if something needs to be updated in order to use Blackboard with full functionality. Note that some browsers are not supported for use with Blackboard. Students and faculty should use an alternative if their preferred browser is listed as unsupported. Note that Microsoft Internet Explorer is no longer supported.

  2. Clear your browser's cache.
If your browser is up to date and supported, try clearing the cache to remove stored data that can interfere with content display and performance. The following sites explain how to clear your cache in the more widely used browsers:
    1. Microsoft Edge
    2. Mozilla Firefox
    3. Google Chrome
    4. Apple Safari
    5. Opera
  3. Try a different browser.
If the above steps do not resolve the issue, try using a different browser. If the problem persists, please contact ITS at 618-650-5500 or at help@siue.edu.
