TechSmith Knowmia (Relay): Put a Knowmia Video in Blackboard (Faculty)

This document provides an overview of how to use TechSmith Knowmia (formerly Relay) to put a video in Blackboard.

For best practices with using video in Blackboard, download the Blackboard Content Type Selector for TechSmith Knowmia.

TechSmith Knowmia is more than a video streaming server. Here are some of the things you can do with Knowmia:
  1. Uploading your own videos
  2. Minor editing (trim beginning, end, or scenes in a video)
  3. Add closed captioning.
  4. Add quiz/survey questions to gauge understanding and/or participation.

Step 1: Log In

1. Log into Knowmia at: https://siue.techsmithrelay.com/

2. Click the blue Sign In button.

3. You will be directed to the SIUE e-ID log in page.

4. Log in with your SIUE e-ID and password.
If you do not see the SIUE e-ID login page, you are not on the SIUE's Knowmia page and may miss out on some of the University's features. Make sure that you have entered through the link above.

Step 2: Create a Folder in Knowmia

Click the plus sign below to expand the menu.

  •  Create a Folder
    • Log into TechSmith Knowmia at https://siue.techsmithrelay.com/.

A best practice for organizing "My Library" in Knowmia is to create a folder for each of your courses to organize your videos. You may create sub-folders for topics, modules, or chapters if you wish.

Note: Moving an existing video/audio file into a folder does not break the link to the video/audio.

      Create a Folder

      1. Click on the Create button in the upper left corner and select New Folder.

      2.  Name the folder by your course ID. For example, BIOL 150. Note you have a maximum of 100 characters, including spaces for the name of the folder. You may use alternative characters such as &, $, %, *, etc. in the title.

      Name the folder

      3. Click the Create button when you are done.

      4. To create sub-folders, click on the course folder and follow Steps 1 - 3.

Step 3: Create Video

TechSmith Knowmia has a built-in video recorder for capturing desktop or webcam video. Unlike using Zoom to record a lecture, Knowmia records only the desktop OR the webcam, not both. However, recording with Knowmia, your video will automatically be added to "My Library." ITS-IDLT still recommends using Zoom so that you can have the video constant over a PowerPoint presentation. Also, if you record to the Zoom Cloud, it will automatically upload your video from the Zoom Cloud to TechSmith Knowmia.

Record Your Video

Click the plus sign below to expand the menus for directions.

  •  Record Video Using Zoom Cloud

Captions not only help the hearing impaired students, but can assist students whose primary language is not English. Captions also assist students who might not be in an environment where they can easily listen to the video. The entering a term or phrase in search box in the video player will highlight the caption containing that word/phrase. This will also assist students reviewing your lectures while they study.

Click the plus sign below to expand the menus for directions.

  •  Add & Edit Captioning
    • Closed captioning not only helps students with hearing impairments, but is beneficial for students where English is their second language.  It is also beneficial for students not able to listen to the video due to sound restrictions in their environment (e.g., at work).

See the Add and Edit Captions video for full features.

Log into TechSmith Knowmia at https://siue.techsmithrelay.com/.

    • For best practices with using video in Blackboard, download the Blackboard Content Type Selector for TechSmith Knowmia.

Embedding a video allows viewers to watch a video right in Blackboard Content Area. We are adding this embedded video to a Web Link rather than an Item so that students that have difficulty viewing embedded videos on a mobile device can view it directly in Knowmia.

Copy the URL from TechSmith Knowmia

      1. Log into TechSmith Knowmia at https://siue.techsmithrelay.com/.

      2. Navigate to the video and click on the video's thumbnail.

      Web link and embedded video

  •  Link a Video in Blackboard with the Knowmia Tool (Clicking on the linking will display only text. Users will click on the link to open the video player. This method is preferred if you have a lot of videos to display in a small space. Note: Analytics and Quiz Results will remain with the videos in Knowmia but will report back to the Grade Center in Blackboard only if the Enable Evaluation grading option is set to Yes.)
    • For best practices with using video in Blackboard, download the Blackboard Content Type Selector for TechSmith Knowmia. Remember, if you're not wanting a connection to the grade center, use the web link option in Blackboard. Use the instructions below if you want to make a connection to the grade center for quiz results or percentage watched.

Linking to a video in TechSmith Knowmia is the quickest way for students to view a video. Linking to an individual video takes up less space in the Blackboard folder than embedding the video. This is critical if you have many other items within the folder. If you have a lot of videos to link to, see the knowledge base article "Link a Knowmia Folder in Blackboard."

NOTE: If you export your course and import it to another semester, the link to the Knowmia platform will export/import, but you will have to re-link to the video.

If you haven't already created a course folder in Knowmia , see the knowledge base article "Create a Folder."
If you haven't uploaded the video to Knowmia, see the knowledge base article "Upload Media to Your Library"

      1. Navigate to the folder in Blackboard that you want the video to reside.

      2. Hover your mouse over "Build Content" to expand the menu. Click TechSmith Knowmia.

      3. Name the video, for example, "Welcome to BIOL 150."

      4. If you have quiz questions within the video, or you want the students to receive points for watching the video, click Yes for Enabled Evaluation.

      Yes enable evaluation

      5. Add the total points possible the student will receive.

Quizzing: If the video has quiz questions, the points students receive will be divided equally by number of total points. For example, if there are two quiz questions and the total possible points are 10, if the student gets one wrong, he/she will receive 5 points for the video.
No quiz questions: If there are no quiz questions and you just want to give credit to the students for just watching, they will receive the points based on the percentage they watched. For example, a student that watches the whole video would receive 100% of the points (10 points in our example above). A student that only watches 60% of the video will receive 60% of the points (6 points).

      Grading in Blackboard

      6. Set remaining options for due date and date and time restrictions as needed.

      7. Click Submit at the bottom of the page.

      8. Scroll to the bottom of the folder for the link. Click on the new link. A Knowmia link is designated by an orange icon.

  •  Link a Knowmia Folder in Blackboard with the Knowmia Tool (Clicking on the linking will display a folder in Knowmia. This method is preferred if you have a lot of videos to display in a small space and/or you plan on adding videos and don't want to link. Note: Analytics and Quiz Results will remain with the videos in Knowmia but will not report back to the Grade Center in Blackboard.)
    • For best practices with using video in Blackboard, download the Blackboard Content Type Selector for TechSmith Knowmia.

Linking to a folder in TechSmith Knowmia is the cleanest way to organize multiple videos. Folders takes up less space in Blackboard and takes less time to link than linking individual videos.  If you have only one or two videos and would like to link or embed them individually, see the knowledge base article "Link a Knowmia Video in Blackboard." NOTE: Individual videos can report a score back to the grade center on video quiz questions, however linking to a folder only records analytics for time viewed and not quizzing scores. Additionally, the privacy settings on each video within the folder must be modified to "Only users from your organization".

NOTE: If you export your course and import it to another semester, the link to the Knowmia platform will export/import, but you will have to re-link to the folder.

If you haven't already created a course folder in Knowmia, see the knowledge base article "Create a Folder"
If you haven't uploaded the video to Knowmia, see the knowledge base article "Upload Media to Your Library"

      In TechSmith Knowmia

The default settings for each video in Knowmia is "Only users from your organization with a direct link". Since you are linking to a folder, the users will not have a direct link to the videos, only to the folder. The Privacy setting must be modified on each video within the folder to be "Only users from your organization".
      1. Navigate to the folder you want to link in Blackboard at siue.techsmithrelay.com.
      2. Enter the folder.
      3. Enter the first video and click the Privacy option.
      4. Modify the setting so the radio button is marked in front of "Only users from your organization". (It will save automatically.)
      5. Click the back button on your browser and repeat these steps for each video within the folder.
