MFA - Change the Authenticator Verification Method
This guide will help you set up Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) using the Microsoft Authenticator app and setting it as your default, which is now required to access virtual lab (V-Lab).
If you received the following error message:
An issue with your selected default MFA method typically causes this error. Please follow the instructions below to set up your account with an authenticator app to resolve this issue.
1. Steps To Change Authenticator Verification Method:

Install the App on Your Phone:
- Download the Microsoft Authenticator app from the Google Play Store for Android or the Apple App Store for iPhone.
Microsoft Authenticator Icon:
Please ensure that you download the app with the icon displayed above, and verify that it is published by "Microsoft Corporation."
- Download the Microsoft Authenticator app from the Google Play Store for Android or the Apple App Store for iPhone.

Go to the SIUE account information page
- Visit aka.ms/mfasetup
- Click "+ Add sign-in method"
- Choose "Authenticator app" from the drop down menu and click "Add"
- If you have already downloaded the Authenticator app click "Next"
- You will be told to "allow notifications" if prompted, click "Next" until the QR code appears.

Scan QR Code:
- Open the app on your phone and tap "Add Account" or the "+" button.
- Select "Work or school account" and then choose "Scan a QR code."
- On your computer, click "Next" until a QR code appears if you don't already see it.
- You will see a screen similar to this:

- Use your phone's camera to scan the QR code on your computer screen, then click "Next" on your computer.

Verify:
- A two-digit code will appear on your computer. Enter this code on your phone and verify your identity.

Complete the Setup:
- Click "Done" after you approve the verification request, your phone will be linked to your app and account, completing the setup process.
2. Steps To Change default Authenticator Verification Method:
- Return to the main Security Info page (aka.ms/mfasetup) if you're not already there, and click "Change."
- Next, select the "App-based authentication - Notification" option, then click "Confirm."
Once you've completed the steps above, your configuration should be correct, and you should be able to sign in successfully.
