Microsoft 365 - How to Register for Self-Service Password Reset
What is Self-Service Password Reset?
The Microsoft 365 Self-Service Password Reset Tool allows you to reset your SIUE password independently without contacting ITS. This service provides immediate access to your account when you experience password issues or forget your password.
Important: To use this feature, you must register two different types of authentication methods: the Microsoft Authenticator app AND a phone number for either text or call verification. Most SIUE users already have one method set up through MFA, so this guide will help you add the method you don't currently have.
How to Register Your Required Authentication Methods
Microsoft requires at least two different types of authentication methods for password reset. If you're already using Multifactor Authentication (MFA), you likely have one method set up. This guide will help you add the additional method you need.
Determining What You Need to Add
- If you currently use the Microsoft Authenticator app for MFA, you need to add a phone number for text or voice call verification.
- If you currently use text messages or phone calls for MFA, you need to set up the Microsoft Authenticator app.
- If you're not sure what you have, follow the steps below to check your current methods and add what's missing.
-
Access the Registration Page
- Go to the account management page.
- Sign in with your SIUE email address and password
- If prompted for MFA verification, complete the authentication process
- Under Security info click UPDATE INFO

- Approve the test notification to verify the setup is working
Option 2: Phone Number

- Enter your phone number with area code
- Choose whether you want to receive verification codes via text message or phone call
- Click "Next" and follow the prompts to verify your phone
-

Frequently Asked Questions
Is this the same as Multifactor Authentication (MFA)?
While Self-Service Password Reset uses the same authentication methods as MFA, they serve different purposes. MFA protects your account during sign-in, while Self-Service Password Reset allows you to regain access if you forget your password. However, both systems require the same types of verification methods, so the methods you set up for one will work for the other.
I already use MFA. Do I still need to register for password reset?
Yes. Even if you're using MFA, you may only have one type of authentication method registered (like just the app or just phone verification). For password reset to work, you need to have at least two different types of methods registered: the Microsoft Authenticator app AND either a phone number or alternative email. You need to verify that you have both types set up.
What if I get a new phone?
If you get a new phone, you should update your authentication methods as soon as possible. If you've registered multiple methods, you can use an alternative method to sign in and update your information.
What if I can't access any of my authentication methods?
If you can't access any of your registered authentication methods, you'll need to contact the ITS Help Desk for assistance with resetting your password.
