Blackboard Ultra (Faculty) - Tests, Forms, and Pools: Create a Pool

This article explains how to create a pool in Blackboard Ultra to build a question bank that you can reuse in multiple assessments.

Create a Pool

In the Original Blackboard Learn, random blocks and question sets could be reused and added to new assessments. In Blackboard Ultra, these are now called "pools." Question pools are used to create a bank of questions that can be reused in multiple assessments (tests and forms).  Use question pools to be sure each student receives a different version of the assessment.

To Create a Pool:

  1. From the Course Content page, click the plus sign where you want to add the pool.
  2. Click Create.
  3. Under the Assessment heading, click Test.
  4. Click the plus sign to add a test question.
  5. Select Add question pool.
  6. On the Add Question Pool page, browse, preview, filter, and select questions from other assessments and question banks in the course you're currently in. You can view the questions, but you can't make edits until you add the question pool to your assessment.
  7. Click the checkbox next to questions that should be included in the pool.
  8. Click the Add Questions button.

Assessment questions used in other assessments and forms in the course are listed. Click the checkbox to include that question in your pool and click "Add Questions" button in bottom right.

  9. Set the number of questions to display to students and the number of points per question.
  10. Click Save.
  11. Click the gear icon to configure the assessment settings, including the details and information, presentation options, results, security, and more.
  12. Click Save.

Additional Considerations

  • You cannot add question pools to assessments if a rubric has been added to the assessment, students have opened the assessment, or you have chosen to collect submissions offline.

    • In the student view, questions randomly selected from a pool appear just as other questions do. Students won't know the questions are from a pool.

    • Before students open an assessment, you can add, remove, and edit individual questions in a question pool. When you remove a question from a pool, the question isn't deleted from your course. You can also delete a pool or move a pool to a new location in the assessment.

    • After students open an assessment or make submissions, you can't add or remove questions from a pool or delete a pool from an assessment. You also can't move the pool to a new location in the assessment.
