Blackboard Ultra (Turnitin) - Turnitin Assignments: Create a Multipart Assignment

This article provides an overview of how to create Multipart assigments using Turnitin's integrated tool in Blackboard Ultra.

Turnitin is a plagiarism prevention and detection tool integrated into Blackboard Ultra. It allows instructors to check student submissions for originality and provide feedback directly on the assignment. There are different types of assignments available in Turnitin. Create a Standard assignment when students need to submit a completed file or document for similarity checking, grading, or feedback.

NOTE: PeerMark is only available on Standard (Classic) assignments. It is not an option on Multipart assignments. For more information about Turnitin assignment types, read Blackboard Ultra (Faculty) - Turnitin Assignments: Assignment Types. To learn more about Peermark, read Blackboard Ultra (Faculty) - Turnitin Assignments: Create a PeerMark Assignment

Creating a Multipart Assignment

The Multipart assignment is created with each part connected in one assignment workflow.

  1. Navigate to your course in Blackboard Ultra.

  2. On the Course Content page, click the plus sign (+) icon in the desired location. Select Content Market.

Create menu reveals sixth option to select "Content Market" with shopping cart icon

  3. Locate and click the Turnitin tile.

Tunitin tile with logo that looks like blue outline of rectangle with an arrow in the lower left corner.

  4. Select Multipart.

  5. The Create multipart assignment panel will appear. Type an overall assignment title that describes the assignment when the parts are put together as a whole.

Adding Parts to an Assignment

  1. Click the + Add Part button to add the first part of the assignment.
  2. Type a title for this part and the assignment instructions in the text editor box and toolbar.

  3. Set the start, due, and feedback release dates. Determine the maximum points allowed.

  4. Optionally, upload a template or attach a rubric.
  5. Review the Submission Settings and click the encircled "i" icon to see more advanced option descriptions:

    • Allow late submissions.

    • Allow resubmissions until due date.

    • Allow submission of any file type.

  6. Review the Report settings for these settings and click the encircled "i" icon to see more advanced option descriptions:
    • Student access to report.
    • Generate Similarity Report.
    • Store submissions for comparison.
    • Compare submissions for similarity.
    • Exclude from Similarity Report
    • Translated matching.

  7. Click the + Add Part button to continue adding more parts to the assignment.

Duplicating Assignment Parts

Duplicating a part copies its assignment details and settings, but does not copy its dates. Add new dates to the duplicated part before creating the assignment.

  1. Click the Duplicate button (looks like a rectangle with another one layered behind it) to duplicate a part you created. Then, adjust the title and settings.

Select the duplicate icon (next to the trash can) to copy one assignment part. Then adjust those settings.

Delete an Assignment Part

Deleting a part permanently removes the assignment details and settings you entered. Save a copy of any instructions you may want to reuse before deleting the part.

  1. Click the trash can icon next to the title of the assignment part.

Trash can icon highlighted next to duplicate icon on one part of assignment

  2. Click the Delete Part button in the pop-up window to confirm.

Reorder Assignment Parts

You can reorder assignment parts before you create the Multipart assignment. Reordering the parts changes the order in which they appear to students in the Multipart Overview and to instructors in the parts navigation. Reordering parts does not require students to complete them in that order. Use availability dates to control when each part is open. You cannot reorder assignment parts after the assignment has been created.

  1. Locate the assignment part you want to reorder.
  2. Select the up or down arrow next to the assignment name to move the part to a different position.

Finish Creating the Multipart Assignment

After you create the assignment, you cannot add, remove, or reorder its parts. Make sure each part is complete and appears in the correct order before continuing.

  1. Check that each part has the correct title, instructions, dates, and settings.

  2. Confirm that no parts show the "Requires setup" badge.

  3. Select Create Assignment. Select Confirm to confirm assignment creation. Once you have created the Multipart assignment you cannot add, reorder, or delete parts.

Click the Confirm button to complete assignment creation.

  4. The assignment parts now appear on the Course Content page in Blackboard Ultra.

Each assignment part is listed as an assignment item on the course content page
  5. Open each part in your view and check the release conditions. Students can only see a part in the Multipart Overview after you open it in Blackboard and after they have met the release conditions.
