Blackboard (Faculty) - Course Menu: Customizing the Course Menu

This document provides an overview of how to customize your Course Menu.

The Course Menu is the main navigation for your Blackboard course. The default Course Menu is black background with white links. The color of the background and the links can be changed. If you wish, the links of the Course Menu can be changed to button.

Course Theme

Changing the course theme will change the background of the shell as well as the colors of the links in the Course Menu.

To change the Course Theme:

  1. From the Control Panel, click on Customization, then click on Teaching Style.
  2. Scroll down to Select Course Theme.

  3. Scroll through the thumbnail images to select a color, design, or subject.
  4. Click Submit at the top or the bottom of the page for the change to take effect.

Course Menu Links

The default Course Menu in the current Blackboard shells is a black background with white links.

To change the Course Menu:

  1. From the Control Panel, click on Customization, then click on Teaching Style.
  2. Scroll down to Select Menu Style.

  3. With the default radio button on "Text," click on the Background Color Palette and select a color.

  4. Click Apply for the change to take effect.

  5. Click on the Text Color Palette and select a color.
  6. Click Apply for the change to take effect.
  7. For accessibility purposed, select a text color that is high contract to the background. Also avoid using greens and blues together as many people cannot distinguish between green and blue.
  8. Click Submit at the top or bottom of the page.

Course Menu Button

The Course Menu navigation can be changed from links to buttons.

  1. From the Control Panel, click on Customization, then click on Teaching Style.
  2. Scroll down to the Select Menu Style section.
  3. Click the Buttons radio button
  4. Expand the Button Library to access the types of buttons.
  5. Click on any button to see the button in review.

  6. Select Button Type drop-down menu from Solid, Patterned, or Striped.
  7. Select Button Shape drop-down menu from Rectangular, Rounded Corners, or Rounded ends.
  8. Click Submit at the top or bottom of the page.
