Blackboard Ultra (Faculty) - Rubrics: Create Rubric
This article provides instructions for faculty on how to create a rubric within Blackboard Ultra courses for assessing student work.
Creating a Rubric
Instructors can create rubrics to assess student work in Blackboard Ultra. Rubrics can be associated with assignments, journal, and discussion items. Follow the steps below to create a rubric:
- Navigate to the course where you want to create the rubric.
- On the Course Content page, find an existing item or create a new one.
- Select the item to access the Content and Settings window.
- Click the gear icon to open the Assignment Settings panel.
- Under Additional Tools, select Add grading rubric.

- In the Add Rubric panel, select Create to create a new rubric. Previously used rubrics will be listed below. Click view View to review the rubric or Add to add it to the assignment.

- On the New Rubric page, provide a name for the rubric in the Name field.
- Use the drop-down menu to select the rubric type:

- To add a row, hover over the line between row headings and click the plus button. Rows typically represent criteria for the rubric.
- To add a column, hover over the line between column headings and select the plus button. Columns typically represent levels of achievement.

- To edit a cell, hover over the cell and click the pencil icon. Type in the text boxes.
- Enter your criteria in the Criteria Title column.
- Enter achievement levels in the top row of each column. The default column names are "Proficient," "Good," "Fair," and "Poor."
- Enter the point values or percentage for each cell in the rubric.
- Select Save.
Additional Considerations
- At this time, you cannot associate a rubric with a test unless you use the Turnitin rubric feature. Review this article for more information: Blackboard Ultra (Faculty) - Turnitin Assignments: Create a Turnitin Rubric
- A rubric cannot be edited after it has been used to grade an assignment. Copy the rubric and make edits on that instead.
- Associating a rubric with an assessment after grades have been assigned will result in override grades until you regrade it with the new rubric.
