Blackboard Ultra (Faculty)- Tests, Forms, and Pools: Exclude Attempt

This article explains how faculty can ignore a submitted attempt in Blackboard Ultra tests or surveys. Ignoring an attempt excludes it from grade calculations.

Excluding a Submitted Attempt

Instructors can choose to exclude an attempt for a student. In Blackboard Original, this was called "ignoring" an attempt. If excluded, the grade is not calculated into the final grade, but the attempt can be reinstated if it needs to be included. If a student needs additional attempts to complete the test, the instructor must also use the exceptions settings to adjust the number of attempts available for that student.

Steps to Exclude an Attempt

  1. Navigate to your course in Blackboard Ultra.
  2. In the Course Content or in the Gradebook area, click on the test or survey for which you want to ignore an attempt.
  3. Locate the student's attempt that you want to ignore and click on the student's name or in the cell where the grade is posted to access the submission/attempt.

  4. On the open attempt, locate the ellipses (3-dot) menu in the top right to find the Exclude option.
  5. Select Exclude Attempt from the menu.

  6. A message will appear to confirm that the attempt should be excluded with information about how that will impact the student's grade. The instructor can cancel or exclude at that point.

Reversing an Excluded Attempt

If you exclude an attempt in error, you can reverse the action. The steps are similar:

  1. Navigate to your course in Blackboard Ultra.
  2. In the Gradebook, click on the empty cell for which you want to reverse the excluded attempt.

  3. Click on View Submission to open that student's attempt and reinstate it as their graded attempt.
  4. Select Undo Exclude Attempt from the menu.

  5. The student's grade will be included in the final grade calculation again.

Important Considerations

  • Excluding an attempt does not delete the attempt. It only removes it from the grade calculation.
  • Students can still see their submitted attempt, even if it's ignored.
  • The original grade or feedback (if any) for the attempt will remain visible unless the attempt is deleted.
