Blackboard Ultra (Faculty) - Accessibility/Ally: Add Headings in Blackboard's Text Editor
This document provides an overview of how to add headings using the Content Editor in Blackboard Ultra. Headings organize your text into a clear visual hierarchy and make the content navigable for screen readers. Students with low or no vision rely on screen readers to interpret and jump between sections of on-screen text, making proper headings essential for digital accessibility.
Headings in Blackboard Ultra
- Enter your text: Type or paste your content directly into the Blackboard Ultra Content Editor box.
- Highlight your text: Highlight the text string you want to transform into a major section header.
- Use the Text Style menu to style your text.

- Apply your options: Title, Header, Subheader, and Paragraph.
- Apply Sub-Headings: For subsections beneath a main heading, highlight the text, open the Text Style menu, and select a logical, nested structure.
Best Practices for Heading Hierarchy
To maintain strict accessibility compliance, always nest your headings sequentially. Never skip a level for visual styling preferences (e.g., do not jump from a Title straight to a Heading 3 just because you prefer the font size).
- Document Title (Automatically handled by Ultra as Heading 1)
- Main Section (Header)
- Subsection (Subheader)
