Understanding and Obtaining Your STAN (Student Telephone Account Number)
*IF YOU ARE USING A TEAMS PHONE YOU WILL NOT NEED A STAN*
If you are a university housing resident trying to make phone calls outside of the campus network, you will need a STAN, which stands for Student Telephone Account Number. Around the office and at the IT Help Desk, you will often hear it referred to simply as a "call-out code."
A STAN acts as your personal authorization key. Without it, the campus system won't allow your call to connect to external networks, whether you are dialing a local number, a long-distance line, or an international destination.
How to Place External Calls Using Your STAN
To place a call off-campus, you must dial a specific sequence depending on where you are calling. Always remember to dial 9 first to reach an outside line, followed by the phone number, and finally your STAN when prompted or seamlessly at the end of the sequence.
| Call Type | Dialing Sequence |
| Local (Within the 618 Area Code) | 9 + 7-Digit Phone Number + STAN |
| Long Distance (Outside 618 Area Code) | 9 + 1 + Area Code + 7-Digit Phone Number + STAN |
| International Calls | 9 + 011 + Country Code + City Code + Local Number + STAN |
| Local Directory Assistance | 9 + 555 + 1212 + STAN |
| Long Distance Directory Assistance | 9 + 1 + Area Code + 555 + 1212 + STAN |
How to Obtain Your STAN
Your STAN is unique to you and can be retrieved online in just a few quick steps.
Navigate to siue.edu/its using any web browser.
Click on the Students tab, select Residence Phone Service, and then choose Obtain Your STAN.
Enter your university E-ID and password when prompted.
Your STAN will be displayed on the screen. Jot it down or save it securely.
Account Status: Your STAN will remain active for as long as you reside in University Housing and remain financially clear with the university.
Lost, Stolen, or Compromised STANs
Because your STAN is tied directly to your student account, you are financially responsible for any charges incurred on it until it is officially reported lost or stolen. Treat it with the same security you would a debit card or password.
If your code is compromised, follow these recovery protocols immediately:
1. File a Report and Cancel the Code
Visit the Information Technology Services Customer Support Center in Lovejoy Library, Room 0005, to complete a official STAN cancellation form. This stops any further unauthorized charges.
2. If Stolen, Contact Campus Police
If you believe your STAN was stolen, contact the University Police at 618-650-3324 to file an official police report.
3. Getting a Replacement
A new STAN cannot be generated until any outstanding balance resulting from unauthorized use is paid in full. Once your balance is cleared, you can visit the ITS Customer Support Center in Lovejoy Library (Room 0005) to receive your replacement code.
