Blackboard (Faculty) - Content Area: Add Files to a Course Content Folder

This document provides an overview of how to add files to a course content folder.

Almost any file type can be added to Blackboard, with Word documents and PowerPoint presentations being the most common. If you wish to add any multimedia files, please see the articles for Mashups and/or Embedded files linked below. 

The Item content type is a preferred design over the File content type. Item includes a text box for adding a description, allowing for clear directions to be given as to what to do with the file.

Add an Item

  1. From within the content area (Coursework, About this Course) or from within a folder (Week 1) click Build Content on the toolbar.

  2. Click Item.

  3. Give the item a name.

  4. In the text box, consider adding instructions or a guide to understanding the content.

  5. In the Attachments area, use one of the following methods to upload the file:
    a. drag and drop the file in the dotted area
    b. click the Browse Local Files button and locate the file on your computer.
    c. click the Browse Content Collection button if you have already uploaded the file to this area.
    d. click the Browse Cloud Services and locate the file on your OneDrive or Dropbox. (Note that this may require an additional login)

  6. Optionally, set the Display After or Display Date for adaptive release of the content is desired. The files will be always available if you do not check the adaptive release boxes.

  7. Click on Submit at the top or bottom of the page.

Edit an Item

  1. To edit an item or change files, hover your mouse over the drop-down menu and click Edit.

  2. Make any changes to the title or text as necessary.

  3. If you are replacing a file, you do not need to delete the Item and re-create it. In the Attachments area, use one of the following methods to upload the file: 
    a. drag and drop the file in the dotted area
    b. click the Browse Local Files button and locate the file on your computer.
    c. click the Browse Content Collection button if you have already uploaded the file to this area.
    d. click the Browse Cloud Services and locate the file on your OneDrive or Dropbox. (Note that this may require an additional login)

  4. Both the current file and the new file will appear.

    Mark for removal

  5. Click on the Mark for Removal to remove the old file (NOTE: The old file will still be in your Course Content. Go there to delete the file permanently.)

  6. Click on Submit at the top or bottom of the page.
