Blackboard (Faculty) - Content Area: Add Files to a Course Content Folder

This document provides an overview of how to add files to a course content folder.

Almost any file type can be added to Blackboard, with Word documents and PowerPoint presentations being the most common. If you wish to add any multimedia files, please see the articles for Mashups and/or Embedded files linked below.

Add a Item

  1. From within the content area (Coursework, About this Course) or from within a folder (Week 1) click Build Content on the toolbar.
  2. Click Item.

    Add item

  3. Give the item a name. If the file is a PowerPoint lecture, consider including the title "Lecture" with the title of the PowerPoint. This will identify to the students that this is a lecture vs. an article to read.

    Add title and description

  4. In the text box, consider adding instructions or a guide to understanding the content.
  5. In the Attachments area, click Browse My Computer.

    Browse My Computer

  6. Locate the file on your computer and click the Open box in the window.
  7. Optionally, set the Display After or Display Date for adaptive release of the content is desired. The files will be always available if you do not check the adaptive release boxes.
  8. Click on Submit at the top or bottom of the page.

Edit an Item

  1. To edit an item or change files, hover your mouse over the drop-down menu and click Edit.

    Edit an Item

  2. Make any changes to the title or text as necessary.
  3. If you are replacing a file, you do not need to delete the Item and re-create it. In the Attachments area, click Browse My Computer.

    Browse My Computer
  4. Locate the file on your computer and click the Open box in the window.
  5. Both the current file (Syllabus_Fall15.doc) and the new file (Syllabus_Spring16.doc) will appear.

    Mark for removal

  6. Click on the Mark for Removal to remove the old file (NOTE: The old file will still be in your Course Content. Go there to delete the file permanently.)
  7. Click on Submit at the top or bottom of the page.
