Blackboard (Faculty) - Turnitin Assignments: Create a Turnitin Rubric

This document provides an overview of creating a Turnitin rubric.

Blackboard rubrics and Turnitin Rubrics are not interchangeable. You cannot export a Blackboard rubric and import it into Turnitin. Both must be created from scratch.

Accessing the Rubric

From a Previously Made Turnitin Assignment

  1. Navigate to the Coursework area or folder where the assignment link resides.

  2. Click the Turnitin Assignment link.The Student submissions page will open.

  3. Click on Edit Setting in the upper right corner.

  4. Click on the  Rubric tab in the upper right corner.

  5.  If you have an existing rubric, it will be listed in the box.

    If you have no rubrics, click the Create Rubric button in the upper right corner.

While Creating a Turnitin Assignment

  1. Follow the instructions in the Create a Turnitin Assignment Knowledge Base article to begin.

  2. Once you have added title, Instruction, Start Date, Due Date, and Feedback release date, Grading and Feedback, and Submission settings, click on the  Rubric tab in the upper right corner.

  3.  If you have an existing rubric, it will be listed in the box.

    Continue to the section Creating a Rubric below.

Creating the Rubric

  1. If you have no rubrics, click the Create Rubric button in the upper right corner.

  2. Click the bullet icon and select Create new rubric.

  3. Scroll to the bottom of the window and click Next.

  4. Title the Rubric. Then select the Rubric Type:

    title and select rubric type: Weighed, qualitative, custom or grading form

The options are:

  • Weighted - Weighted criteria for balanced grading
  • Qualitative - No numeric scoring, works well for formative assessments
  • Custom - Values in each criterion scale box are customizable
  • Graded Form - A grading list with simple scoring

Weighted

  1. Enter the dimensions of the rubric: number of criterion rows and number of scale columns.

  2. Toggle Enable range scoring and Enable equal criterion weights.

  3. Click on each of the boxes to fill in details, points, descriptions, etc. 

    Title the scale levels, and give point values


  4. When all the details, points, descriptions, etc. are filled in, click Save at the bottom of the page. 

Qualitative

  1. Enter the dimensions of the rubric: number of criterion rows and number of scale columns. Click Next

  2. Click on each of the boxes to fill in details, descriptions, etc. Note there are not point or percentage values on this option.

  3. When all the details, descriptions, etc. are filled in, click Save at the bottom of the page. 

Custom

  1. Enter the dimensions of the rubric: number of criterion rows and number of scale columns. Click Next

  1. Click on each of the boxes to fill in details, descriptions, etc. Note there are not point or percentage values on this option.

  2. When all the details, descriptions, etc. are filled in, click Save at the bottom of the page.

Grading Form

  1. Enter the number of criterion rows. Click Next

  3. When all the details, descriptions, etc. are filled in, click Save at the bottom of the page.
